Morphoses

Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company began in 2007 under Artistic Director Christopher Wheeldon and Executive Director Lourdes Lopez. Morphoses aimed to blend classical dance with innovative collaborations across music, visual arts, design, film, and fashion. They created a vibrant platform that captivated audiences and earned residencies at prestigious venues like New York City Center, Vail Dance Festival, and Sadler’s Wells in London.

When Christopher Wheeldon stepped away in February 2010, Lourdes Lopez guided Morphoses into a bold new chapter. She rebranded into a curatorial model, inviting rotating resident choreographers to craft innovative, evening length works. Under her stewardship, Morphoses premiered captivating pieces including: The Music of David Lang with two commissioned pieces by choreographers Jessica Lang and Pontus Lidberg, Luca Veggetti’s Bacchae and Pontus Lidberg’s Within: Labyrinth Within. Morphoses fostered collaboration and nurtured creativity.

Morphoses presented 37 works, 15 commissions. and performances in 11 theaters around the world.  It inspired a new generation to embrace evolving possibilities in dance and introduced a multi-residency theater business model. Morphoses had assets surpassing a million dollars with negligible liabilities. Morphoses’ Board of Directors elected to merge with Miami City Ballet, shortly after Lourdes Lopez was named Artistic Director.
